Oh also I once saw a CV that included the information that though the applicant had got a 2:1 they had achieved a first class dissertation. Do people think this is stupid or a good idea?

Really obvious point to make but proof read proof read proof read. I once watched my then boss whittle down a thick stack of CVs by discarding any that had spelling errors.
When I was 15 I did my mandatory work experience at Woolworths; the manager there was a recent Accounting graduate and as I was sat in the office with him he was going through potential CV’s and pointing out some of their pitfalls, and there are three things I remember him pointing out specifically: -
1. Never use a photo unless asked for…[Read more]
In my day job I have had to look at a few CVs and one thing I can definitely say is that pictures are, unless you rate yourself a 9/10 or more for looks, a very bad idea. My all time favourite was a guy who inexplicably had an apron on and a massive grin on his face as he wielded a meat cleaver into some meat. What potential employers are supposed…[Read more]
As mentioned these large companies must get hundreds of CVs through and I am guessing they all look very similar. What do people think about jazzing it up to make it stand out- perhaps adding logos next your respective school, university and previous companies you have worked for? Any other ideas to make them remember your resume, for the right reasons?
I went to a graduate event where an advisor gave her opinion on how she goes through people’s CV’s. The major info I came away with is that most employer’s rarely (if ever) turn to that second page on your CV, not unless you’ve really interested them. This advice is probably more pertinent when thinking of big companies that get tons of job…[Read more]
Is it worth trying to squeeze a CV onto one page? I’ve managed to get all my info (after seriously, seriously cutting it down) on to one page, but I’m starting another internship in a few weeks and will have to go back to two pages. How does a page and a half look, or is two full pages better? (No, I have no idea why I’m so obsessed with pages…[Read more]
This is a question I’ve often wondered about! I have actually taken the time to craft two CVs. One has much more information and is way more detailed. It’s about 1.5/2 pages. The other one is EXACTLY 1 page and — as you mentioned — that takes some serious editing/cutting down.
I use my short CV (which is more journalism-centred) for applying…[Read more]
What do people think about the use of the 1st person on CV’s? Serious faux pas or out dated convention?
We’ve uploaded one to get you started. It’s decent but perhaps not perfect. Who’s got a better one? Upload your CV and vote for your favourite.

I’d never thought of that. It makes sense: the dissertation is a long-term project. I can’t say whether it would come across as amateurish to the employer, but it’s evidence of a prolonged and successful investment of an idea.
Still not sure it wouldn’t look lame, like you were trying to gloss over the fact that you didn’t get a first. It might give the employer a hint though that your 2:1 was in the upper range – 68/69, as opposed to 60. Not sure employers care either way though, as long as it’s not a third!
