Travelling and Working

Unfortunately there is often a trade-off between travel and work. Has anyone managed to combine the two? If so, it would be great to hear what you did and how it went.

Even if you don’t fancy the idea of teaching it can be a great way to gain a foothold in the area, particularly if you try to learn the language whilst you’re teaching. This especially applies to places like China where there’s always a demand for English speakers in many sectors other than teaching. It’s also much less of a headache for…[Read more]

Working isn’t necessarily what you have to do when you go abroad – not for money, anyway. Charities will put you up and give you the time to travel and sightsee if you work for them.

It’s true that teaching English is the easiest way to work abroad. I managed to get a job at the British Embassy in France which was great. Embassys employ ‘locally engaged’ people (people already in the country) as well as diplomats (people employed by the Foreign Office then posted abroad) so that it’s always an option to look at. If you’re…[Read more]

I spent two consecutive summers coaching soccer in California. This was a great experience and each week I was sent to a new location that could be anything from 5 miles down the road to a 5 hour road trip. It was great fun, it did not cost my much overall (I spent what I made afterwards travelling around and going to Vegas!), I met some brilliant…[Read more]

I think you’re right that the British Council is a fantastic starter for getting yourself some international experience but there are other ways that you can do it that can be a lot more career-focussed if you’re not into teaching and that can prove a lot more challenging and worthwhile.

It is definitely tricky looking for a role abroad as you…[Read more]

Hi everyone, I just finished a year teaching abroad in France, after graduation, as part of the British Council scheme. As you all said, teaching never appealed to me and it still doesn’t, but after searching and searching for jobs in France last year and finding that I was underqualified for everything in their eyes, apart from au pairing, it…[Read more]

This is also something I’d like to figure out. I recently wrote something for the Graduate Game about work programmes that allow you to travel. Teaching English abroad seems to be the easiest avenue for travelling somewhere distant and working, but teaching really isn’t what I have in mind for myself.

I second that. I’d love to know because I was planning on teaching English in Japan (it seems to be one of the easiest jobs for foreigners to get)… but ,recently I decided; actually, I really don’t want to teach English. I still want to work abroad somewhere, though.
