One of my most embarrassing comments on an essay I handed in was ’what’s with all the semi-colons?!’ So I read one of my lecturer’s/marker’s journal articles she’d written and consequently stopped using the ’semis’ and started using hyphens more (just like her). The next mark she gave me was the best (and last) I got throughout university.
